Luyện dùng 15 thành ngữ phổ biến trong tiếng Anh

1. The best of both worlds: vẹn cả đôi đường.

 

Ví dụ: By working part-time and looking after her kids two days a week she managed to get the best of both worlds (Bằng cách làm việc bán thời gian và chăm con hai ngày một tuần, cô ấy đã xoay xở để vẹn cả đôi đường).

 

2. Speak of the devil: Nhắc Tào Tháo, Tào Tháo đến.

 

Ví dụ: Hi Tom, speak of the devil, I was just telling Sara about your new car. (Ồ Tom, vừa nhắc đã xuất hiện, tôi đang nói với Sara về chiếc xe hơi mới của anh).

 

3. See eye to eye: đồng quan điểm. 
 

Ví dụ: They finally saw eye to eye on the business deal. (Họ cuối cùng cũng đồng ý với nhau về thỏa thuận kinh doanh).

 

4. Once in a blue moon: hiếm khi.
 

Ví dụ: I only go to the cinema once in a blue moon. (Họa hoằn lắm tôi mới đến rạp chiếu phim một lần). 

 

5. When pigs fly: chuyện không tưởng.
 

Ví dụ: When pigs fly she’ll tidy up her room. (Mặt Trời mọc đằng tây thì may ra cô ấy mới dọn phòng).

  

6. To cost an arm and a leg: rất đắt đỏ.
 

Ví dụ: Fuel these days costs and arm and a leg. (Dạo này xăng dầu đắt đỏ lắm).

 

7. A piece of cake: dễ như ăn kẹo. 
 

Ví dụ: The English test was a piece of cake. (Bài kiểm tra tiếng Anh đó quá dễ).

 

8. Let the cat out of the bag: vô tình làm lộ bí mật.
 

Ví dụ: I let the cat out of the bag about their wedding plans. (Tôi vô tình làm lộ bí mật về kế hoạch cưới hỏi của họ). 

 

9. To feel under the weather: cảm thấy không khỏe. 
 

Ví dụ: I’m really feeling under the weather today, I have a terrible cold. (Hôm nay tôi thấy trong người không khỏe, tôi bị cảm nặng rồi). 

 

10. To kill two birds with one stone: một mũi tên trúng hai đích.
 

Ví dụ: By taking my dad on holiday, I killed two birds with one stone. I got to go away but also spend time with him. (Đưa bố cùng đi nghỉ lễ thật là nhất cử lưỡng tiện. Tôi vừa được đi chơi vừa có thể dành thời gian ở bên bố). 

 

11. To cut corners: làm ẩu để tiết kiệm chi phí, đốt cháy giai đoạn.
 

Ví dụ: They really cut corners when they built this bathroom, the shower is leaking. (Họ xây phòng tắm ẩu quá, vòi hoa sen đang bị rỉ nước rồi). 

 

12. To add insult to injury: đổ thêm dầu vào lửa.
 

Ví dụ: To add insult to injury the car drove off without stopping after knocking me off my bike. (Như đổ thêm dầu vào lửa, sau khi đâm tôi ngã khỏi xe đạp thì chiếc ôtô không dừng lại mà lao đi tiếp). 

 

13. You can’t judge a book by its cover: Đừng trông mặt mà bắt hình dong.
 

Ví dụ: I thought this no-brand bread would be horrible; turns out you can’t judge a book by its cover. (Tôi nghĩ cái bánh mì không có nhãn hiệu gì thì ăn sẽ rất tệ, nhưng hóa ra tôi đã lầm, không thể trông mặt mà bắt hình dong được).

 

14. Break a leg: Chúc may mắn (thường dùng để động viên người sắp bước lên sân khấu).
 

Ví dụ: Break a leg Sam, I’m sure your performance will be great. (Chúc may mắn nhé Sam, tôi tin phần trình diễn của anh sẽ rất tuyệt).

 

15. To hit the nail on the head: mô tả chính xác những gì gây ra vấn đề hoặc tình hình hiện tại, chắc như đinh đóng cột.
 

Ví dụ: He hit the nail on the head when he said this company needs more HR support. (Anh ấy rất chính xác khi nói rằng công ty này cần thêm hỗ trợ từ bộ phận quản trị nhân sự).
